This is my word/ photo collage. The words behind it are all quotes from the book. The image is of Emmanuel Jal as a child, it is the same image found on the cover of the book. The collage is to represent the life of Emmanuel Jal and his time as a child soldier. Enjoy :)

Letter from Emmanuel to Babba
Dear Babba,
Please come back to us soon. We are travelling to many different villages, trying to escape the viscous war. We don’t know when the SPLA will come so we always have to be ready to run, and grab all the stuff we have. I worry about Mamma, she is often beaten by men who come to the house and yell at her and Grandma. I hear her crying sometime and I just want her to be happy. There are so many children to take care of and I want to help as much as I can, but I can only do so much. There isn’t much food to go around here, and often there are fights if one of takes too much and all of us have to sleep on the dirt floor. This place is nothing like home and all I want to do is go back.
Mamma tells me that it is a secret that you are fighting and that we cannot tell anybody. I hope the work you are doing will help us so that we can all go home and be together again. When the SPLA comes, we have to hide. One time, we hid under the bed for 3 days. We didn’t get to go outside or talk to each other, we only got up when we had to get the kisra that we all shared.
It seems that there is always war right outside our door. Areas of our village are mined, and streams and rivers are poisoned by the army. I have seen so many terrible things and it is hard to stay strong for Mamma. Soon I would like to be able to look after the cows and be a real man. I hope you come home soon and that the war will end.
Sincerely,
Emmanuel

Empathy
Empathy is a emotion that all people feel. When someone feels one emotion, the people around them will also feel this kind of emotion, like this emperience is happening to them aswell. Way back when, when we only knew people in our town, we could only feel empathy towards them. Now, people don't just feel empathy for the people in their lives, and around them, they feel empathy for people all around the world. This is important because it allows us to understand and get a feel for other peoples lives. People who lead totally diffrent lives can teach us new things and can be a very useful experience.
